I am often told how much people dislike coming to the dentist which made me wonder what is it about the dentist that causes an onset of anxiety.
A recent survey in NZ found that 60% of men and 70% of women felt somewhat anxious before attending a dental appointment.
So what is it that makes us feel anxious? The most common causes of anxiety include fear of pain, fear of injections, feelings of loss of control, embarrassment and loss of personal space.
At The Smile Company we aim to make your dental experience as enjoyable as possible. We use the best anaesthetic techniques to ensure your dental treatment is pain free and can offer sedation services in selected cases. Otherwise here are some tips to help you relax at the dentist:
- Bring your own music to listen to
- Bring a trusted family member or friend along for support
- Try relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or muscle relaxation which involves tensing and relaxing different muscle groups in turn
