Sugar loaded café drinks and the new craze Turmeric Lattes

Research group Action on Sugar found that 98% of the flavoured hot drinks sold by cafes contained an excessive amount of sugar. More than one third of the drinks contained more sugar than a can of Coca-Cola. With a whopping 25 teaspoons of sugar (more than three times the recommended daily intake) a Starbucks Hot Mulled Fruit Drink was the worst offender. Chai lattes, hot chocolates, mochas and other sweetened coffees such as caramel lattes were also found to be sugar loaded. Full results can be found on Action on Sugar’s website (http://www.actiononsugar.org/).

Subsequently there has been a growing trend for cafes to offer sugar free / coffee free alternatives such as a turmeric latte. Made from a blend of turmeric, ginger, pepper, cinnamon and other spices, the turmeric latte is a spicy earthy treat. Curcumin the active ingredient in turmeric is now on the ever growing list of natural products heralded as a cancer preventer, an anti inflammatory agent, a cognitive booster and a weight loss agent.   With growing evidence to support these health benefits, it’s no wonder turmeric lattes are becoming the new craze! However you should be aware that turmeric like red wine and coffee can cause staining of your teeth. So be sure to brush your teeth regularly!
