For April 2012 only. Take home kit special price $249.

Save $400!

1. Professionally Dispensed At-Home Whitening Kits

For April only $249

At-home kits incorporate an easy-to-use lower-concentration whitening gel that remains on the teeth for an hour or longer (most often overnight). This process is repeated for as long as it takes to achieve the desired results. The lower the whitening percentage, the longer it may safely remain on the teeth. The gel is applied to the teeth using personalised custom-made whitening trays that resemble thin mouth guards. These trays need to be very neatly fitting and are made from personal impressions of your teeth. Professionally dispensed at-home whitening kits provide good results. At-home kits are a cost effective method but do take longer, can be less comfortable, and maybe less effective than In–Office procedures.

2. In-Office Whitening

The major benefits of In-Office Whitening are significant colour change is achieved in a short period of time, and your dental professional is monitoring the process on the spot. The process involves the carefully controlled use of a relatively high-concentration of whitening gel, applied to the teeth by the dentist or trained hygienist after the gums have been protected with a paint-on rubber coating. Generally, the whitening gel remains on the teeth for 15 to 20 minutes. This is repeated up to four of five times in one session to achieve the optimum results. Those with particularly stubborn staining may be advised to return for one or more additional whitening sessions, or may be asked to continue with an at- home whitening system.

Sensitivity

Sensitivity can be a problem with all whitening processes and is carefully monitored to reduce the effects.

Chemical buffers can be applied to reduce the problem during and after the procedures. Sometimes the In-Office process may be foreshortened if the problem is severe. Your dental professional is the best person to monitor this.

The long and the short of it is that teeth whitening works. Virtually everyone who opts for this cosmetic treatment will see moderate to substantial improvement in the brightness and whiteness of their smile.
It is our privilege to bring you the very best in oral beauty. Excellence in this speciality is provided by fully qualified and registered Dental Hygienists acting under the guidance and supervision of leading Cosmetic Dentists at The Smile Company.

Before seeking out your valentine this year, make sure your oral health is up to a loveable standard.

One of the most important physical attributes when it comes to attraction is your smile, getting it right for Valentine’s Day could make or break the night.

Bad breath can be a real passion killer. It is a common problem, and is usually caused by the smelly gases released by bacteria that coat the teeth and tongue and is often a warning sign of advanced gum disease.
Knowing you have fresh breath does wonders for your self-confidence and relationships. The opposite is true for people with bad breath, and it is not going to leave a good impression if you go to kiss someone on Valentine’s night and they turn their cheek because you have bad breath.

Here’s some advice on the best way to beat bad breath.

If you’re going out on a date, think carefully about what you’re eating. Garlic, coffee and onions all have the potential to cause bad breath, so if you’re hoping to get a kiss after the date, look for foods which won’t leave a bad taste in the mouth.

If you need to freshen your breath up, carry some sugar-free gum, as chewing will stimulate saliva and help prevent your mouth from drying out.
Take a couple of minutes to floss or clean in between your teeth with interdental brushes before you leave, as bits of food that get caught between the teeth and will rot and cause an unpleasant smell.
Brush your tongue, or using a tongue scraper
Use a mouthrinse containing an essential oil.
If you are a smoker, kick the habit for the night, as tobacco also causes bad breath.

To test if you have bad breath, simply lick the inside of your wrist, let it dry and sniff. If the smell is bad, you can be fairly sure you have bad breath. If it continues, contact us for advice.

Wow, what a year we have had!
Fortunately we had closed for Christmas when the new events occurred on 23rd December 2011.
I was quietly eating my lunch and contemplating my next job to get ready for a family Christmas, when bang, we were hit by another large quake. It was not so bad and so I went out to the garden and started my tasks, when whammo, a big 6 shook the house and garden.
Not a lot more damage, but got me thinking I had better check the business. Fortunately the building at Cambridge Tce looks exactly the same as before and I will be very confident to go back to work there when we restart on the 9th Jan 2012.

This is to let you know The Smile Company will be striving to reach new pinnacles of excellence in 2012. We have a dedicated and robust team to help with your dental concerns in a very caring way.
Check out our “good sorts” blog.

Please all have a very happy and safe New Year!

Regular visits to the dentist for tooth cleaning may provide more than just a brighter smile.

According to data compiled by researchers in Taiwan, people who had their teeth professionally scraped and cleaned had a 24 per cent lower risk of heart attack and 13 per cent lower risk of stroke compared to those who never had a dental cleaning.

Poor oral hygiene has been associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

The researcher who presented the findings of the multi-year study at the American Heart Association scientific meeting in Orlando on Sunday surmised that professional tooth cleaning appears to reduce inflammation-causing bacterial growth that can lead to heart disease.

“Protection from heart disease and stroke was more pronounced in participants who got tooth scaling at least once a year,” said Dr. Zu-Yin Chen, a cardiology fellow at Veterans General Hospital in Taipei, who presented the findings.

The analysis of more 100,000 people beginning in 2007 was based on data in the Taiwan National Health insurance data base. None of the study subjects had a history of prior heart attack or stroke, but the analysis did not adjust for risk factors such as smoking or obesity.

Researchers said a higher frequency of professional tooth cleaning led to a greater reduction in heart risk. They defined higher frequency as at least two visits to the dentist for a cleaning in two years.

As published in Metropol Sept.2011

The original Smile Company is open and conducting business as usual. Established in 1978, the clinic offers excellence in dental care by an experienced and effective dental team. Good news for clients is all staff have been retained, meaning that the same familiar faces will be on site to help you with your treatments.

The team
“Our staff are resilient and loyal and have stuck by the business,” says dentist David Blair. “They acknowledge that getting back to normality is the fastest way to reduce the stress. While there has been considerable stress and personal damage, the team has been relentless in maintaining our mantra for excellent dental care and exceptional service.”
The team recognises that many people have been displaced from their businesses or homes and that it is easy to forget the routine for regular dentistry. This includes the regular dental hygiene and dental review to identify and sort the little things and prevent them from becoming major problems.

The location
The clinic is located in a tree-lined “sylvan haven” on the right side of the Avon River and was relatively unscathed by the earthquakes.
“Since the events from September last, our building in Cambridge Terrace has withstood every-thing thrown at it. We realised our building was designed for three storeys but only two were ever built, so it has very strong foundations and well-engineered walls,” David says. “While the city is right next door and non-functional, our street is safe with excellent parking, and has really easy access from Durham and Montreal Streets.” “We are excited that The Cashel Mall will reopen in late October!”

The service
The company’s way to show support for the community is to provide free consultations for emergencies. Front office manager Vicki can be contacted on 366 1948 for any information or to make a booking, while the website www.smileco.co.nz offers good advice for many areas of dental care.
Along with the latest technologies and treatments available, and the ultimate smile enhancements, another advanced treatment option provided for implant dentistry is the ability to have surgical implant placement and the crown and bridge-work seamlessly provided under one roof. There is no need for outside referrals, and The Smile Company has ACC accreditation with full funding for implant surgery.
Emphasis is placed on being well acquainted with clients’ needs. Treatments are planned to suit individual budgets and to maintain those healthy and fabulous smiles.
“Our rooms and staff help provide a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere,” David says. “Our clients tell us they love our staff, our environment and our service.”

At the Smile Company, from yesterday 25th July, we are offering a free consultation for your dental emergency.

Wait there’s more!

As a charitable gesture to the people of Christchurch, from next week, August 5th, we are offering 10 free emergency dental treatments for new clients, one tooth or gum treatment only per client, each Friday morning until further notice.

Respond to this blog and tell us what your emergency is, or if its really urgent call us on 366 1948 and we’ll book you in.

The Smile Company recognises that the population of Christchurch city has changed since the recent earthquake events. The company recognises there are a lot of new people to the area and many people are displaced. As a charitable gesture, in recognition of the excellent hard work all these people have been doing and the duress local people have suffered, the Smile Company is offering 10 free dental emergency treatments per week until further notice. Naturally conditions will apply and this is only available for genuine emergencies for new clients, only one treatment per person, will be available. This is indeed for the diagnosis and the provision of treatment, and not just a free consultation.
